Death
Death of an Aged Woman.Mrs. Sophia Grumn died at th home of her daughter, Mrs. Ricklef Gerdes, in Richland township, last Friday morning, the 1st., inst . Mrs Grumm had reached the advanced age of 87 years. Her maiden name was Julfs , and she was born in Klienhorsten, Germany, March 7, 1823. She was married to William Grumm, in 1848, and they came to America, in 1856, settling at Dixon, Illinois where they resided for seven years when they came to Jones county Iowa, which afterwards remained their home. Mr. Grumm died 21 years ago, and during the last 17 years of her life, Mrs. Grumm made her home with her daughter, Mrs Ricklef Gerdes, where she was given kind care and attention. She was a bright, active and intelligent woman, who retained her mental faculties up to the last days of her life. For a number of years she had been deaf, but her eyesight was good, and she was an omnivorous reader. She had been ailing for ten days previous to death, but her condition was not considered serious until four days previous to the final summons. The fatal disease was bronchitis.
Mrs. Grumm was the mother of 9 children, 5 who survive her, viz Mrs. Anna Jacobs, Santa Ana, California; Fred Grumm, Orange, California; Mrs. Mary Gerdes, Monticello; Mrs. Lizzie Rickels, Terra Bella, California; and Mrs. Julia Englebart , Pomeroy, Iowa. She is survived by 47 grand-children and 6 great grand-children. The funeral services were conducted, last Sunday afternoon, by Rev. William L Schuetz, of whose church Mrs Grumm was a devoted and consistent member. A very large assemblage of friends and neighbors attended the funeral services. Mr. Schuetz spoke in both English and German Mrs. Grumm was laid to rest in the St. John's cemetery beside her husband.
