Jean Cocheron

Jean Cocheron was a Huguenot of distinguished birth. His ancestors were leaders in commerce and had patent rights of nobliity won on the field of battle or in service for their sovereign. Before coming to America, Jean converted as much of his property as he could into money. He was smuggled out of Marseilles in a hogshead on a vessel bound for the New World. He was brought to New York and soon moved to Staten Island.
