Aged People Passed Away The Past Week

Anke Mary Schoon And D. J. Collmann Were Among Those Called.

Mrs. Anke Mary Schoon, for many years a respected resident of Wayne township, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Meta Kasper, last Friday morning, February 19. at 8:45 o'clock. Mrs. Schoon had been In falling health for a number of years, but due to the care of her daughter and her physician, her life was spared until her final illness.
Mrs. Schoon was born August 18. 1858, at Petersburg Ill. She was a daughter of the late John Dietrich Poppe and his wife, Anke Mary (Wilken) Poppe. Mr. and Mrs. Poppe and their family removed from Illinois to Jones county when their daughter was six years old. She attended the rural schools of Wayne township, and received her religious training In Zion's Lutheran church. It was in that church that she was confirmed April 4. 1875, by Rev. Oetjen.
The marriage of the subject of this sketch to the late John Schoon occurred March 17, 1879. Mr. and Mrs. Schoon became the parents of five children, all of whom survive their mother. Mr. Schoon passed away August 8. 1892. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Schoon went to housekeeping on the Schoon farm south of Amber. Following her husband's death., Mrs. Schoon continued to live there until 1911. She then went to the home of her daughter. Mrs. Meta Kasper, three miles south of Monticello, where she lived until Mrs. Kasper removed to Anamosa fifteen years ago. Her mother accompanied her to that town, and it was there that her death occurred. Her surviving children are: Thomas Schoon, of Amber; Frederick, of St. Paul. Minn.; Mrs. John Folkers of Langworthy; Mrs. Anna Tobiassen and Mrs. Meta Kasper of Anamosa. She is also survived by eight grand-children, and two brothers. Frederick and Henry Poppe, of Wayne township. Mrs. Schoon was a fine type of woman. She was a devoted Christian, and took a vital interest in the work of her church and the activities of the community in which she lived. Her children will long remember her for her many virtues.
Funeral services were held for Mrs. Schoon at Zion's Lutheran church in Wayne township last Sunday morning, February 21. Previous to the service at the church short services were held at the home of Mrs. Kasper in Anamosa. Rev. J. Willms had charge of both services which were attended by many of Mrs. Schoon's old friends and neighbors. There were so many in attendance at the funeral at the church that not all of them were able to be seated.
