MRS. ANNA BROKENS DEAD
Death claimed Mrs. Anna Brockens of Wayne Twp. last Tuesday morning at 4:20 a.m. at the home of her children, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Zimmerman in Cass Twp. Mrs. Brokens was born December 5, 1845 at Leerhafe, Ostfriesland, Germany as daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peters. In her infancy she was baptized and at the age of 14 confirmed in the Lutheran church at said place. In the spring of 1870 she came to Monticello, Iowa where on April 22, 1870 she joined hands in holy wedlock with Johann Hinrich Brockens who died at Amber, August 17, 1910. To this union 6 children were born of whom all but one son, Gerd are living.
The family always resided in Wayne Twp. In 1908 they retired from active farm work to Amber. For the past 5 years Mrs. Brockens made her home with her children living at different places. When visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Zimmerman, about two weeks ago she became ill and died at the age of 84 yeas, 8 months and 14 days.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 21st at 1 o'clock at the Zimmerman home in Cass and about 1:30 at the Wayne Lutheran church with Rev. J. Willms in charge.
She is survived by one son, Mr. John Brockens of Strawberry Point; 4 daughters, Mrs. Margaret Zimmerman of Cass Twp., Mrs. Anna Stadtmueller of Castle Grove, Mrs. Mary Burrack of Arlington; Mrs. Sophie Bodiker of Amber, 32 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 half-brother, Mr. Ricklef Gerdes in California. With Mrs. Brockens one of Wayne's oldest settlers and members of Wayne Zion's Lutheran church has passed away. Grandma Brockens was a kind, Christian woman who reared her family in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

She Had Resided In Jones County Since Coming From Germany.

Death closed the earthly sufferings of Mrs. Anna Brockens at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Zimmerman, in Cass township, last Tuesday morning at 4:20. She had been in failing health for some weeks, and during the early part of August was compelled to take to her bed. Her death is attributed to the infirmities of old age.
Mrs. Brockens was born in Lerhave. Germany, December 8. 1846 She was confirmed in the Lutheran church, and received her education in that country. When a young woman 24 years of age, she emigrated to the United States, and was married near Monticello to John H. Brockens, April 22, 1870. Mrs. Brockens' maiden name was Anna Peters. Following their marriage, they lived upon what was then known as the Hall farm south of Monticello. Later they lived on a farm in Wayne township, and removed in 1908 to their home at Amber. It was here that Mr. Brockens died August 17, 1910.
Mr. and Mrs. Brockens became the parents of six children, one of whom, Gerhard, died twelve years ago. The other children are Mrs. Ralph Zimmerman, Cass; John Brockens, Strawberry Point; Mrs. Austin Stadtmueller, Castle Grove Township; Mrs. Fred Burrack, Arlington; Mrs. George Bodeker, Cass Township. In addition to her children, she is survived by thirty-four grandchildren and twenty-seven great grandchildren.
Throughout her life. Mrs. Brockens was a consistent member of Evangelical Lutheran church, and took a great deal of interest in it and did a great deal of work in the Ladies' Aid of this church. Her funeral was held this afternoon at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Zimmerman at 1 o'clock, and thereafter at Zion's Lutheran church In Wayne township. The funeral services were in charge of Rev. J. Willms, pastor of Zion's church. Mrs. Brockens' body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Wayne cemetery. She was a good woman, who always bore the good will and esteem of her neighbors. She richly deserved the words of eulogy that are everywhere expressed among her acquaintances.
