Colonel John Hite

(1710 or 1715 - 1792)

Colonel John Hite was part of the Frederick Co., Virginia Militia which fought during the French and Indian Wars. In 1758 he built his family a fine stone colonial house near Red Bud on the Opequon which he named "Springdale". Later in 1787 he built the first brick house and two years later the first merchant mill west of the Blue Ridge in the valley. He was prominent in community affairs, serving as a vestryman in the Christ Episcopal Church, Justice of the Commonwealth of Virginia, etc.
