Martin Dewitt

(Abt 1777 - Aft 1839)

Martin drove a covered wagon to Brown Co., Illinois from Kentucky in 1830 at age 50. He was a teacher in Cooperstown Township in 1832. Appeared in Section 26, Cooperstown Twp, Brown Co., IL with eight children, 3 boys and 5 girls. He was a candidate for Justice of the Peace, Schuyler Co. Illinois Sept 3, 1835. In 1839 he went to Texas as an officer for the border wars and did not return.

B. June Babcock shared that her mother had a cousin still living that was Martin's Granddaughter, she was extremely sharp and knew many thing about the family. She was the daughter of Peter Thomas, mother Julia Dewitt Thomas. She lived in Mt. Sterling, Illinois I visited her there. She said "Martin was a prospector and land was the reason he when to Texas", and as we know he put in for land there. "He was coming home and had written he was on his way, but never arrived".
