Individual Details

Jacob Van Meter Sr.

(Abt 1745 - 24 Jan 1838)

Jacob and Isabella lived east of the Opequon at "Killdare," a plantation of 200 acres that Jacob's father sold him on April 12, 1780.  ~evans/aqwg03 quotes Don C. Wood's article in The Berkeley Journal (Issue 10, 1981) concerning their home there:
The Jacob Vanmetre House is located off Route 9 across from Newton D. Baker Hospital.  The log house was built by Jacob Vanmetre Sr. about 1785.  It is located on land he had received from his father Abraham Vanmetre, son of John Vanmetre [Indian Trader]who died in 1745.  The house was built with exceptionally large logs and has a very large fireplace in the basement (first floor).

This belongs to a "Jacob Van Meter", but I'm not sure which one. Steven Butler says that although Jacob Van Meter Sr. did not serve the patriot cause in a military manner (he was too old), a nephew bearing the same name did. The two men have often been confused by their descendants and others."

McClure goes on to report that others in the party going to Kentucky with Jacob Jansen Van Meter was a "Jacob Van Meter, son of Henry Van Meter, one time ensign in Clark's Illinois Regiment and later a captain of Jefferson County Militia."
This Jacob is a nephew of Jacob Sr., but not a son of Henry.
So, this next note might belong to this Jacob -
"He then served in the Revolution under Colonel George Rogers Clark in the campaign of the Northwest. He was at Kaskaskia in 1778. In 1782 he commanded a company as captain in Clark's expedition against Indians under the renegade Girty. Jacob was also in the Coshocton campaign in Captain William Crawford's company under command of his nephew, Col David Shepherd."
