Individual Details

John Hawkins Sr.

(Abt 1675 - 1715/16)

The will of John Hoakins [Hawkins] written 1715 in Hanover Parish, Richmond County, Virginia establishes six minor children: William, John, Benjamin, Sarah, Elizabeth, and James.

Among the neighbors of this Hawkins family are Willis and Hauxford families, kin of Sarah Willis who married son Benjamin Hawkins. Later when son Ben and his wife Sarah were in Orange County, living near them was Sarah's mother Sarah Wood (Willis Wood Hudson Turburville) nee Hauxford, who was at that time in her second marriage to Henry Wood. This is the Henry Wood John mentions in his 1715 will concerning his son William's apprenticeship, "but in case Henry Wood doth think fit to take my son William, I desire he may have him, provided he will learn him the trade or calling of (plasterer) and that William do serve the said Henry until he shall arrive the age of 21 and the said Henry to give the said apprentice a suit of clothes sufficient for one of his place and calling at the time of his freedom."
