Individual Details

Jonathan Chenoweth

(1757 - Bef 1822)

Jonathan went from Virginia to Kentucky about 1805 and was in Muhlenberg Co by 1810. He brought his family to the vicinity of Perry in Pike Co. about 1827.

Born probably in Frederick Co., Virginia, Jonathan was the second son of William and Ruth Calvert Chenoweth. Like his two bothers, John and William, he would serve in the Revolutionary War. He was a Private in Berry's Company, 8th Virginia Line, but, because of his handsome appearance, he was transferred into the elite guard of General George Washington. After his discharge, at the age of 22, he married Chloe Atchison near Patterson Creek, Hampshire County. She was the daughter of William Atchison and Sally Trumbo. Jonathan and Chloe started their family of 8 children in Virginia. They settled in Hardy County, which was formed in 1786 from Hampshire County. Before the turn of the century, they relocated to the frontier lands of Kentucky, where Jonathan's brother, William, had settled earlier. Jonathan may have died between 1810 and 1822 in Muhlenberg Co., KY. His wife Chloe is known to have been living in 1822, as she is listed as a member a Meade Co., KY Baptist Church along with the families of two of her children. Jonathan is not listed. In the 1820 census of Kentucky, only on Jonathan is listed, presumed to be Jonathan, Jr.

No will or family bible exists to confirm the time or place of Jonathan's death or the names of his children. Cora Hiatt skipped a generation in her book and listed Jonathan's son, Jonathan, Jr., in his place as a son of William(3). Thus she missed a whole generation of children and their lines. This skip has added to the confusion about this large family branch. Of the 8 children cited by Harris, only 4 have known lines to present day. The sons Jonathan, Jr. and Samuel are known by land transactions with their father and Chloe, a daughter, by the aforementioned church affiliation. Elizabeth is a presumed daughter by time and location. It should be noted that in the 1830s Jonathan, Jr. Samuel, and Elizabeth and David Casebier, all are found in Morgan Co., IL living near each other. Some of these families would later move to Missouri and Kansas. Many of the later generations would move to the Pacific Northwest.
