Mary "Polly" Rice

(19 Jun 1811 - 14 Feb 1887)

Mary Rice and several of her brothers as well as her parents were living in Canandaigua, Ontario Co., NY. It is probable that she grew up with Jacob Griger Flanders as a neighbor. She was featured in Everton's Genealogical Helper as a mystery person by a Bonnie Frazier in Elgin, TX, who was searching for information on her heritage. Jacob Griger was born in 1810 in NY. He was married to Mary Rice in 1829 in Hardin Co., KY. In 1834, he removed to Missouri. He and his wife were blessed with six children. He died on Oct.19, 1897, Maysville, MO. Edith Flanders Dunbar's 1st edition says Mary his wife was born in KY, but no birth records can be found of her birth. Her birthplace is listed as NY in the DeKalb Co., MO. Census Records. Her parents were from NY and it is most probable that she was from NY Her parents are found in the same county that Jacob Griger was born in (Ontario Co., NY). She was b. June 11, 1811 and d. at Maysville, MO. They are believed to be the progenitors of the Flanders clan in MO. In a letter from Mrs. Rosemary Dawood, historian and genealogist from Chicago, IL, dated Oct 20, 1994, she states: on page 229 of the History of Ontario Co., NY published in 1876, it states; " William Hamilton, a teacher, who wrote an account of the early days on July 26, 1876, mentioned these names: James Wright, Levi Rice, Benjamin Sly, Job Wood, Jacob Flanders, John Flanders, John Green, Mr. Albert, whose widow married George Flanders, John Smith, Joel Foster, Elder Abijah Wright, Ephraim Hartwell, who married the widow of Joel Foster, the Vinals, the Hartwells, and the Skinners." This passage pretty well verifies that my theory that these families all knew each other prior to emigrating to Kentucky is confirmed (R:1309).
