Individual Details
Eula Craig Hughes
(5 Jan 1913 - 4 Mar 2005)
Little Craig suffered an accident when she was eight years old during a family visit to her aunt, Mrs. J.W. "Sally" Prouty, in the summer of 1921. Sally wrote about the mishap in letters to her son C.harles Will:
August 22, 1921 "Last week Charlie’s three oldest children were here for a little outing. They were having quite a merry time, keeping us busy, too, watching after them, but despite our vigilance dear, little Craig fell off the fence by the front gate and broke her arm, right at the elbow joint. We couldn’t get a Doctor so Bettie and Pauline, who was spending the week at home hurried her to Meridian where she could get medical, or rather surgical care. It is a bad break and the dear child suffered horribly at first. I went down to Meridian this A.M. and have just gotten back, found her resting now comfortably. Bettie is still with them and Pauline is going back tomorrow."
Sep. 14, 1921 "Craig is getting on fine. The playthings, for her, came in Wednesday’s mail O.K. I am expecting to go to Meridian tomorrow so will take them to her. If I can’t go will send them by mail."
Dec. 2, 1921 "Little Craig has never regained the use of her hand since her arm was broken, the fingers seem to be paralyzed. This is certainly sad. Charlie is having her take osteopathic treatment and the doctors say there is hope that her hand may yet be restored. How I do trust it may be."
Mrs. Craig Sheely of Meridian celebrated her 90th birthday on Jan. 5, 2003. She was honored with a birthday celebration given by her children, Joyce and George Hyatt of Quitman, Buddy and Emily Sheely of Meridian; her grandchildren, Deborah Madison, Stanley Lee, Anita and Gene Tolbird, Eddie and Melanie Sheely and Rick and Laura Davis, all of Meridian; her great-grandchildren, Troy and Shawn Tolbird, Matthew, Brittany and Kimberly Davis, Andrew and Jacob Sheely; and great-great grandchild, Karlye Tolbird. Mrs. Sheely was married to the late Edward Sheely Sr. of Meridian (Franklin County Times [Alabama], January 18, 2003).
