Lemuel was the son of Robert Hamilton English and Sarah Jane Smith among the first known settlers of the Cecilia area of Hardin, Co., KY. The family first moved to the Hardin County, KY area circa 1810. According to "The Early History of Cecilia, KY," by Carolyn Wimp and Nellie Woodring, Robert Hamilton first appeared in the tax records of Hardin County in 1812. The family, father and sons, owned large tracts of land in the West Rhudes Creek area and land that is now Cecilia. Lemuel was married 3 times, first to Sarah "Sally" Briscoe in 1813, Eliza McIntire in 1828, and then Judith Ann Pearman in 1835. Lemuel eventually moved the family, probably around 1835, to the Rolling Fork River area in the northern part of Hardin County, lands that are now part of Fort Knox. Lemuel's siblings were:
