Individual Details

John Henton Chenoweth

(25 Dec 1817 - 1 Sep 1898)

Born in Bulter Co., KY on December 25, 1817, John, the 5th son and 6th child of Jacob Van Meter Chenoweth and Mary 'Polly' Haycraft, married Emarine English, at the age of 23 in Lewis Co., MO. Emarine was nineteen at the time, the daughter of Lemuel English and Sarah Briscoe. Sarah Briscoe and John were cousins. Her grandmother was Hester Henton, the daughter of John's grandmother, Mary 'Polly' Van Meter and her first husband, David Henton. Hester had been raised in the same household of John's father, Jacob Van Meter Chenoweth, and John had Henton as a middle name in memory of this relationship. John came to Pike County, IL with his parents about 1832 as a teen. The English family had also come from Kentucky and settled in Pike Co. Why the marriage occurred in Lewis County, 55 miles west of Pike Co., across the Mississippi River is uncertain, but John and Emarine lived here for a time as their first child was born in Lewis Co., MO. The family soon settled back in Pike County where they are found in the 1850 Census. John is said to have gone to California, lured by the gold rush. He must have liked what he saw, as he returned in 1852 to gather his wife and 3 sons, setting out by Wagon Train in early 1853 for California. They settled in Sonoma County, near Sebastopol, where John bought 60 acres. He would farm in this area, first cattle, and then fruit trees. Emarine would die in Occidental, Sonoma Co., CA at age 71, John, outliving her by exactly 6 years, dying at the age of 81. Both are buried in the Sebastopol Evergreen cemetery, Sonoma Co., CA. John Henton one of the first Chenoweth families to settle in California. Several of his siblings followed him. Today, family members still live in this area and in Curry Co., OR to the north.
