Moses Rowley Sr.

(Abt Mar 1632 - 3 Mar 1705/06)

birthplace not sure - London?, Middlesex?, England.

He came to America with his father, a brother and a sister between 1632-4?. The first mention of Moses in Plymouth Colony is in the will of William Palmer of Duxbury, dated 7 Nov. 1637. In 1657 Moses took the freeman's oath at Barnstable. Elizabeth & Moses had 10 children, presumably all born in Barnstable. From 1657 until 1681 there is no sure trace of him. In that year, he was a constable, and was occupying lands at Succonessett (Falmouth). Moses was a Deputy of the General Court between 1673-79 and in 1692 under the new charter according to Savage. He was also a cordwainer (a maker of shoes).

Though he was a Court Deputy in 1692, he must have already left or planned to, for in (East Haddam Deeds, Volume I, page 554) it states that Moses Rowley, Senior, "late of Saquanessett, now of Machinmodes(Machimoaus) in Haddem" bought 60 acres of land of Jonathan Gilbert, originally laid out to John Henderson of Haddem, deceased. The date of this deed is May 3, 1692, and there is another deed dated October 4, 1693, which names Moses Rowley. An agreement of the heirs of James Bates of Haddem, dated February 1691/2, refers to "Mony in Moses Rowley's and John Ackley's hands, to be reserved to pay debts with.". These records indicate that he removed to Haddem as early as 1691. That his wife Elizabeth disapproved of the removal is clear, for in 1714 she made a deed in which she declared that she had been left without support and dependent upon the bounty of her sons, John Fuller and Moses Rowley, and conveyed to them all her rights of dower to lands in Falmouth, which her husband had sold to Parker without her consent.

On 15 Aug. 1700, ack. 15 April 1700, cancelled 16 Aug. 1705, Moses Rowley, Sr., deeded to son Matthew Rowley for life, 60 acres bought from Samuel Ackley in Matchamoodus (E. Haddam). Matthew to care for Moses for life and if he survives Moses, to do his part in caring for Matthew's mother and sister Sarah.

On 13 Jan 1704/5, ack. 14 June 1705, Matthew Rowley nullifies the deed to 60 acres his father had given him.

On 14 June 1705, ack. same day, Moses Rowley and Matthew Rowley agree to divide a tract given them by their father Moses Rowley Sr.

On 13 Jan 1704/5, ack. 14 June 1705, Moses Rowley Sr. gives to son Matthew 30 acres of the 60 acres received from Samuel Ackley.

Inventory was taken of the estate of Moses Rowley 15 June 1705. Moses' will was dated at E. Haddam CT 16 Aug. 1704 and proved 8 March 1705/6; he named sons Moses and Matthew, daughter Mehetabell Fuller, son John Fuller,"the rest of my children" and mentions his wife (unnamed); sons Moses Rowlee and John Fuller were to be executors.

[*Note-Researcher Bill Barton believes that Moses Rowley Jr. (not Sr.) bought 60 acres of land from Jonathan Gilbert on May 3, 1692. He sites Bassette, 638 as his source. Bill also says that Moses Rowley, Sr., bought from Samuel Ackely land in Matchamoodus (now Moodus) not East Haddam, which is 3-4 miles to the south. Bill Barton's e-mail is bartstam@juno.com.]
