Individual Details

Daniel Townsend Jr.

(Abt 1753 - 28 Mar 1778)

The parentage of this Daniel Townsend is unknown due to lack of evidence. He had previously been linked to Daniel Townsend and an assumed first wife, since he didn't marry Hannah until 1752. But Daniel and Hannah filed their marriage intentions in North Yarmouth, Maine in 1752 which at that time included included several towns which now are Freeport (separated in 1798), Pownal (separated in 1820), Cumberland (separated in 1789), Harpswell (separated in 1789). In 1760 Pownalboro included Dresden, Alna, Wiscasset and Perkins. Note: Daniel & Hannah were in Dresden prior to moving to Vassalborough (that part which is now Sidney) as did Mathew Hastings, my ancestor, whose daughter Sarah Hastings married Dodivah Townsend (Reynolds 2009).

Daniel, Jr, born about 1753 most likely in Maine (Portsmouth New Hampshire 1740 (Fisher's Soldiers, p. 799) this birth information belongs to a different Daniel Townsend): died Valley Forge, Pennsylvania 5 March 1778 as a soldier. He was of Vassalborough when he enlisted for 3 years at Bellingham, Massachusetts (Clarence Stewart Peterson, Known Military Dead During the American Revolutionary War 1775-1783 [1967], hereafter Rev War Known Dead, p. 167; MS&S 15:935): married Hallowell 29 December 1774, Sarah Ingles Butterfield (Vital Records), born 1 October 1756, daughter of Ephraim and Mary (Snow) Butterfield (Vital Records), died Sidney 20 May 1845 ae 88 years 7 months (Vital Records; g.s. Longley cemetery). She married (2) Vassalborough 21 June 1780, Nathan Sawtell of Vassalborough (Vital Records), born Groton, Massachusetts 24 February 1758, son of Moses and Elizabeth (Merriam) Sawtell. Daniel's name appears on the tax roll of 1772 in Hallowell (Charles E. Nash, The History of Augusta [1904], p. 117). He was voted hogreeve in Vassalborough 20 March 1775 (Town Records). His estate was probated 15 June 1779 (Lincoln county Probate 2:159-69, 240-44). Daniel's son, identified in the deeds as Dodivah Townsend 2nd, asserted on 7 December 1846 that he was the 'only surviviong child' of Daniel and Sarah townsend as was thus entitled to his father's pension (Revolutionary War Pension #W24479) (Reynolds, 306-307)
