Funeral services for Clara Oltmanns, 91, were held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 17, 2004, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Anamosa. The Rev. LaVerne Beener officiated at the service. Interment "was held at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. Friends
called from 4 to 8 p.m.,Friday, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa
Clara Oltmanns died Wednesday, July 14, 2004at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center,Monticello, folowing an extended illness.
Survivors include three daughters, Alfreda (Vernon) Lange of Monticello, Dorothy (Bing) Postel of Anamosa, Linda (Marvin) Smulevitz of Savannah, GA; one son, LaVern (June) Ulferts of Anamosa; four step-daughters, Rachel (Bill) Griffith of Monticello, Wilma (Joe) Cox, Elda (Norman) French, both of Anamosa, Helen (Jack) Heiken of Monticello, one sister, Anna (John) Martensen of Anamosa, Two sister-in-law, Loretta (August) Dirks of Monticello, Luella (Carl) Ulferts of Anamosa; sevral grandchildren; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Louis Ulferts on July 17, 1943 and William Oltmanns, Sept 15, 1962; one step-son, John Oltmanns, May 1, 1982, two grandchildren, Steven French, Christopher Stackhouse; six brothers, George, Bill, John, August, Reinhard and Ben Dirks and one sister, Minnie Harms.
Clara was born May 22, 1913 in Jones County, the daughter of Gerd and Friederike Dirks. She was baptized June 19, 1913 at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, confirmed March 24, 1929. She married Louis Ulferts Dec. 16,1931, After Louis's death, she married William Oltmanns on Aug. 12, 1946.
Clara was a good cook, especially at baking bread. She enjoyed crocheting and other crafts, but her favorite pastime was playing the organ and singing hymns. She would read the Bible daily and when she was troubled, could always find a Bible verse to console her. Clara never missed church services, it was very important to her, and enjoyed attending
Circle meetings. She was always a happy person, even as she endured many of life's hardships.
