John Busey

(17 Jul 1771 - 25 Jul 1863)

John Busey, an early settler on the North side of Salt River in the part of Franklin County which became Anderson County, was born July 17, 1771 in North Carolina and died July 25, 1863. His wife, Martha Holmes Busey, was born December 12, 1770 in Delaware and died August 25, 1860. They are buried near Glensboro (then called Camdenville), in the Busey graveyard near their home. His land was part of the 18380 A. patent of Hollingsworth and Bunner. This name is sometimes spelled Bucy, Buecy and Bussey. They came from England to Maryland about 1660. Matthew Busey, John's father, went from Maryland to North Carolina, (probably Rowan or Rockingham County) where he married Edith Philpot Wilcoxen in 1767. Matthew brought his family to Kentucky about 1780 in one of Boone's parties, stopping first at Boonesboro. Later they came to Franklin County. where his son, John, remained. Matthew Senior died in Shelby County. Others went to Indiana and Illinois. The name is found today in Shelby County Kentucky, no doubt the descendants of Matthew. Matthew's two youngest children were born in Kentucky, the others in North Carolina.
John Busey, very well educated and one of the most influential men of his day, was one of the justices of the first court held in the newly-formed county of Anderson February 5, 1827. For many years he took an active interest in county affairs. He was a constable in Franklin Co. in 1819. He lived to be ninety-two. The outstanding physical characteristic of this family is their great height, many being over six feet.
In an old paper, the minutes of the convention of delegates of the Baptist churches held at Glenn's Creek meeting house in Woodford County October, 1826, 1 find that John Bucy was a delegate from the Fox Creek Church. This family must have belonged to the Old School Baptist Church.
