Jonathan Alderman

(Abt 1720 - 6 Jun 1758)

JONATHAN3 ALDERMAN, (William2-1) was born in 1722 and came to the Beekman Patent in 1754. He was taxed in Crum Elbow from Feb. 1753 to Feb. 1754 and in Beekman from June 1754 to 1755 with an assessment of £1 in 1755. On 22 Oct. 1753 Jonathan Alderman and John Hoag both of Crum Elbow signed a note payable to Charles Bullis, blacksmith, for the sum of £9/12 which was payable "on or upon the first day of December next ensuing". Jonathan seems to have signed the note himself. When Jonathan and John did not pay they were sued in the May Court in 1754 for the penal sum of £19/4. Jonathan retained Fletcher Mathews to defend him in the action. [An 2938]. Jonathan Alderman and his wife, name unknown, had a daughter Rebecca, possibly named for his mother, baptized on 25 Aug. 1754 at the Rombout Presbyterian Church. This is the only other record we have for him. Aldermans in America, page 521 states that John Alderman, the brother of Jonathan, died 6 June 1758 but that their mother in her will spoke of a "Jonathan," but the name on the tombstone is clearly "John". It is probable that it was Jonathan who d. 1758. There was a Jonathan Alderman in Neversink in Ulster County in 1800.
