Monticello Express May 18, 1922
CASTLE GROVE; May 17.
Knake & Gerdes bumped up against a streak of hard luck last week, when they lost 48 early pigs inside of 24 hours, with malady that seemed to baffle the veterinarians. The pigs were apparently alright when fed in the evening, and when Mr. Knake went out in the morning, 23 of them were dead. A veterinarian was called from Monticello, who made a post mortem examination on some of the pigs, and then summoned two veterinarians from Cedar Rapids, and they too were puzzled. Messrs. Knake & Gerdes have only about 20 pigs left.
