Life Crushed Out as Result of St. Paul Elevator Accident
St. Paul Dispatch: With his son looking on but powerless to save him, Anton Weber was the victim of a fatal elevator accident in the Lowry building early this morning. His life was crushed out by the cab on which his son is an operator, but which was at the time being operated by Henry that, night watchman at the building.’
Weber was 54 years old and had been a janitor in the building. He and his son arrived about 6:30 a.m. conflicting stories are told as to how the accident occurred, neither the son nor Rath being able to state clearly what did happen, though the son says carelessness caused the fatality. Rath says that after father and son entered the cab he closed the door and started the car up. Benjamin Sears, colored, also a janitor in the building, who was entering the building at the time, says the doors were not closed.
Weber’s clothing became entangled in the gates and he was forced through the glass surrounding the elevator shaft. He suffered internal injuries and died just after he reached the City hospital in the police ambulance.
He is survived by his widow, the son, Arthur, and a daughter, Mrs. A. E. Smith of Minneapolis. Coroner Jones has the body at the county morgue and probably will hold an inquest.
Mr. Weber was well known in this vicinity, having lived at Swan River until about five years ago.
