Sir Gilbert Jocelyn

(Abt 1040 - )

Sir Gilbert Jocelyn, a wealthy Norman knight, came into England, it is said, with the Conqueror, and married the daughter of a Saxon thane. He settled in Lincolnshire, where he held of Gilbert of Gaunt the lordships of Semperingham and Tyrrington (French, 236).

Sir Gilbert was the son of Egidius Josselin, a nobleman of Brittany who took up his abode in England in the time of Edward the Confessor. Sir Gilbert returned to Normandy, and came back to England with the Conqueror, from whom he obtained extensive territorial grants in the county of Lincoln, among which were the lordships of Sempringham and Tyrington (Burke 1833, 358).

Sir Gilbert Jocelyn was a wealthy Norman knight. Lodge, Peerage of England Vol. 3 p259 , revised 1789 asserted that Sir Gilbert was the son of Egidius Josselin, a nobleman of Brittany who crossed into England about 1045. Sir Gilbert was believed to have gone to Brittany and returned to England with William the Conqueror (unproven). Sir Gilbert held the lordships of Semperingham and Tyrrington.
