John Prouty

(25 May 1718 - 29 Jan 1792)

John was a blacksmith. John was one of the colonists who moved westward from Scituate to the newly developed part of Massachusetts of Leicester (district of Spencer). He married and resided there the rest of his life. His first land grant was deeded to him there March 7, 1747. He built a saw and grist mill at "Millsville," part of lot 21 in Spencer on Seven Mile River. This land was owned and used by some of his descendants for almost a century. He died January 29, 1792. His will provided for his wife and eleven children, and for his orphan grandson, Samuel Prouty, the son of Benjamin.
