Josiah Torrey

(28 Jan 1658/59 - Abt 1722)

Josiah was called a tailor in deeds. He was the only one of his brothers whose descendants continued to live in Scituate. He had a considerable tract of land contiguous to Herringbrook hill on the north. His house was in the valley one fourth of a mile north of the South Meeting-house, opposite to the present [1831] house of Jr. James N. Sparrell. He unfortunately lost his life, 1693 [Deane must have the date wrong]. He was in the act of tying the Town's stock of powder on the roof of his house, when a spark from the chimney falling, his life was instantly lost, and his house laid to ruins."
