Martinus was the ninth of 11 children born to Wilhelmus Reinerus and Dorothea (frencken) Van Sloun. He married Theresa Breher on October 2, 1874 in Chaska (Carver), MN. Together they had 7 children: Marie D, Frank J, Leonora, Josephine A, Edward Paul, Karl L, and Alma Katharine.
