Mrs. Matilda Jane Soper died at her home near Anamosa, March 20, 1909, at the age of 37 years, 9 months and 5 days. Mrs. Soper will be remembered by Monticello people as Matilda Suhr before marriage. Her girlhood days were spent in Monticello. In 1893 she was married to Charles M. Soper, and removed to a farm between Anamosa and Amber. She is survived by her husband and ten children, all of whom were present at the funeral services, which were conducted by Rev. Thomas Potter, of Monmouth, last Monday afternoon. Mrs. Soper died of pneumonia after a week's illness. Rev. Mr. Potter who preached from the text, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord," stated in his biographical sketch of the deceased that she was christened in childhood, and early united with the church. In the summer of 1908, in order that she might better help two of her children who desired to unite with the church, she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Amber. He said of her, further, that her whole ambition was in her interest in the welfare of her family, both spiritually and intellectually. No sacrifice was too great, no task too hard or burden too heavy but she cheerfully took it up if by any means her boys and girls, of whom she was justly proud, might be helped thereby. A large company of her sorrowing friends followed the remains of Mrs. Soper to their last resting place in the family vault in Riverside Cemetery, at Anamosa.
