Carl A. Schatz Passed Away Last Tuesday

He Had Spent His Entire Life As A Resident Of Jones County.

The unexpected death of Carl August Schatz occurred at the home of his sister, Miss Bertha Schatz, last Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock. Mr Schatz had sustained a stroke of paralysis, near the Cropp harness shop, which affected his left side.
He was taken to the home of his sister, where he was given devoted care by his relatives. It is thought that he suffered a second stroke Tuesday, which culminated in his death. He had not been in the best of health during the last few months, and this fact probably contributed to the stroke of paralysis which caused his demise.
Born in Anamosa.
The birth of Mr. Schatz occurred in Anamosa, June 3, 1858. His parents were August and Elisa Schatz. When Mr. Schatz was seven years old the family settled upon the Schatz homestead two miles north of Monticello, in Lovell township. It was here that Mr. Schatz lived for a period of 50 continuous years. He retired from active farm work in the spring of 1916, and came to Monticello, where he had since continued to reside.
e attended the Monticello public schools and also rural school number 5 near his home. During his youth a tribe of Indians was encamped on part of the Schatz farm and he enjoyed the unusual experience of playing childhood games with the Indian boys.
Married to Anna Harms.
The marriage of Mr. Schatz to Anna Marie Harms occurred January 21, 1886. They became the parents of eight children, two of whom preceded their father in death, viz: Clara, at the age of two years, and Carl, who died September 9 1933. at the age of 39 years. The other children are: Mrs. Adolph Egger, Mrs. Wilke Behrends, and August, of Monticello; Harm, of Marion; Mrs.. Harry Maire of Oelwein ; and Mrs. A. J. Holmes of Cedar Falls. He is also survived by twenty- six grandchildren and one great- grandson; also by one sister, Miss Bertha Schatz, of Monticello.
Mr. and Mrs. Schatz were privileged to celebrate their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary in 1911. Mrs. Schatz passed away September 18 1918.
Funeral services for Mr. Schatz will be held at the home of Miss Bertha Schatz at 1:15 tomorrow afternoon. February 1. and further services at 1:30 o'clock at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran church. Rev. H. L. Adix will have charge of both services. The pallbearers will be six grandsons of Mr Schatz .viz: Clarence and Carl Egger, August and Willard Schatz, and Irvin and Laverne Schatz.
Throughout his active life Mr. Schatz followed the vocation of a farmer. He had served as an officer in the Lutheran church, a school director in the school township in which he lived so long, a stockholder in the Monticello State bank, and a member of the board of directors cf the Farmers' Mutual Creamery company. At the time that he died he was a member of the board of directors of the Oakwood cemetery association.
