Johannes Wilhelm Friedrich "John" Stahlberg

Mr. and Mrs. John Stahlberg Observe Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. John Stahlberg of Scotch Grove observed the 50th anniversary of their wedding at their home Wednesday. A surprise dinner honoring the couple was held at noon for immediate relatives and friends. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Stahlberg took place at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Antons, in Wayne township, April 9, 1891. The ceremony was performed by the late Rev. C. Mardorf, pastor of the Wayne Zion Lutheran church. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Stahlberg lived on a farm near Center Junction where Mr. Stahlberg was employed on the railroad. In 1902 they moved and purchased a farm near Scotch Grove where they now reside.
Mr. Stahlberg was born at Fehman, Holstein, Germany, Sept. 27, 1868. In 1884, the family came to this country, coming directly to Jones county, Iowa.
Mr. Stahlberg was a Rawleigh retailer for nearly twenty-five years, and is well known through-out the country. He grew to manhood in Wayne township and attended the Wayne township schools.
As Sophia Antons, Mrs. Stahlberg was born at Marks, Hanover, Germany, May 4, 1871. She came to this country with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Antons, while still a child. She attended the schools in Wayne township. Before her marriage, Mrs. Stahlberg was employed for several years in the Jones county home.
Mr. and Mrs. Stahlberg are the parents of eight children, Henry Stahlberg of Cedar Rapids, August Stahlberg Stahlberg and Mrs. Hayo Tobiason of Wayne township, Carl Stahlberg and John Stahlberg of Scotch Grove, Mrs. Roy Streets of Davenport, and Mrs. Earl Lehman of Monticello. One daughter, Grace, died in 1934. They also have 15 grandchildren and one great grand-child.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Stahlberg are in very good health.

John Wilhelm Friedrich Stahlberg27 September 1868—16 August 1960
John W. F. Stahlberg Sr., 314 West 4th St., died at the John McDonald hospital Tuesday noon, Aug. 16, following a cardiac condition. He had been a patient there almost six weeks. Services will be held Friday, Aug. 19 at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church of rural Monticello with burial at the Oakwood cemetery. The Rev. Otto Zwanziger will officiate at the services. The deceased made his home with a daughter, Mrs. Earl Lehmann of Monticello.
Born Sept. 27, 1868 in Oldenberg, Schleswig-Holestein, Germany, he was the son of Johannes Stahlberg and Dorothea Schlueter Stahlgerg. He came to the U. S. alone when he was 16 years old, and first stayed with relatives in Clinton county, later living with relatives near Center Junction. On Apr. 9, 1891, he was married to Sophia Marie Antons of Center Junction at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church of Monticello. They lived in Wayne and Scotch Grove township their entire married life, moving to Monticello in 1946. Besides farming, he was a representative for the Rawleigh products for 25 years.
Survivors include a son, John Stahlberg Jr., of Monticello; three daughters, Dora, Mrs. Hayo Tobiason, Monticello, Ann, Mrs. Leroy Smith, Cedar Rapids, and Celena, Mrs. Earl Lehmann of Monticello. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death in Sept. 17, 1950 as did one daughter, Mrs. Grace Reid and three sons, August, Henry and Carl, and one brother and four sisters.
