Bridgegroom-Elect a Suicide
Henry Hammond Kills Himself Almost on the Eve of His Wedding.
Spencer, Mass., Jan. 6. - Henry Hammond, twenty-three years old, committed suicide this morning by shooting. No adequate motive can be assigned.
Hammond was engaged to be married to Miss Iris Prouty of Spencer, the announcement of their wedding had been made, and the ceremony was to to have been performed next Tuesday. Hammond took Miss Prouty to drive yesterday afternoon, and in the evening was at her home. This morning he assisted his father at the barn, and they went into breakfast together. As breakfast was not ready, the young mand went into the library, and when the maid called him did not reply. After calling a second time, she went into the room and found him stretched on the floor with the pistol beside him.
Miss Prouty is the daughter of William H. Prouty of Spencer, and both the Hammond and Prouty families are very prominent in town.

Suicide Suicide's Sequel.
The Mother of Young Hammond's Sweetheart, Brooding Over His Death, Kills Herself.
Spencer: Mrs. Maria Teal Prouty, wife of William H. Prouty, of this place, committed suicide by strangling herself with a small silk handkerchief.
Mrs. Prouty was the mother of Miss Iris Prouty, whose sweetheart, Henry Hammond, shot himself to death on Friday last. the young couple were to have been married. The only cause discovered for Hammond's suicide was his extreme bashfulness, which, it was thought, made him seek death rather than undergo the ordeal of a marriage ceremony.
Mrs. Prouty was deeply attached to young Hammond, and it is believed that her mind was unsettled by brooding over his death.
