At Danville --- For Many Years He Resided in Lexington.
Danville, March 28. -- Rev Stephen Yerkes, D. D., of the Danville Theological Seminar, died suddenly this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. He has been confined to his room for about two weeks with rheumatism, but was thought to be improving. He was born at Hathborough, Pennsylvania, in 1817.
Dr. Yerkes was an eminent scholar and linguist and was one of the best known Presbyterian ministers in the United States, have in taken an active pat in the councils of the church at its general assembly meeting for many years.
For years he has resided in Danville, being the most active worker in and President of the Theological Seminary here. He resided in Lexington before coming to Danville.
Among his children are the Hon. J. W. Yerkes, the well known lawyer of Danville; Prof. William Yerkes, of Paris; Mrs. John M. Van Meter, of Boyle county, and Mr. Street Van Meter, of Missouri.
His wife, who survives him, was the widow of the Hon. Wm. S. Anderson.
Dr. Yerkes' first wife is buried in the Lexington Cemetery, and his remains may be taken there for burial.
