Alexander McCulloch

( - 11 Sep 1643)

Alexander McCulloch last of Myrton, Wigtownshire, Scotland, died 11 Sep 1643 according to his will and the James Iredell genealogy. Alexander left Scotland for Ireland with his father about 1612-1618 to escape prosecution for debts. Alexander's father was William McCulloch of Myrton, Wigtownshire, Scotland, died about 1626 in Ireland. Alexander completed liquidation of the family assets in Scotland during the 1630s requesting and receiving a safe conduct from his creditors and the king to return to Scotland to work out settlements in the courts.

....and was succeeded by his eldest Son Alexander McCulloch, who finding his Estate much embarrassed by Family Debts borrowed some large Sum of Money from a Doctor McCulloch ___ and on the repayment of which he secured by heritable Bonds & put his Estate of Myrton &c. into the hands of his Brother in Law John McCulloch Laird of Ardwell, & designing that the Rents thereof should clear his Debts, & after having fixed his affairs in such manner, Laird Alexander came to Ireland with his Family to Sir Henry Oneill, who gave him Lands near the water, where he resided until the time of his Death, which happened in the Year 1643....(Iredell)

Alexander McCulloch son of William: Although not served heir to his father until1634, he sold the barony of Cardiness in 1629 to John Gordon of Ardwall (RMSRS,XXVI, 25); that is to say what remnants of it remained to him, John Gordon already having, by purchase and wadset (mortgage), acquired the greater part of it. This disposition which appears to have been out right in its terms, should be particularly noted. It was to loom large in the subsequent history of the Myretoun and Cariness families. Alexander died in Ireland in September 1643. Dr John McCulloch of Barholm, a creditor, served as executor of his will, which was probated on 11 Sep 1643. (Edinburgh Wills and Testaments). From Iredell’s genealogy, we have that the above Alexander McCulloch had a son, William of Brandalston who had two sons: Henry McCulloch of Brandalston and James McCulloch of Grogan. (Epperson)
