Jurgen "George" Tobiassen

(28 Oct 1859 - 29 May 1922)

Tobiason family settles in 1864

Juergen Tobiason came to the United States as a boy with his parents, Michel Tobiassen and Catharine Tobiassen, in 1864. He had three brothers and four sisters who also came to this country. They came here from Marx, Germany.
Ahlke Christine Tobiassen came to the United States at the age of 18, and left the rest of her family behind. She was married to Juergen Tobiassen on Sept. 16, 1881. She came with friends from Marx, Germany. Juergen Tobiassen's parents, Michel and Catherine T., were charter members of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, which was organized on June 2, 1872. Juergen Tobiassen — known to most people by the name of George or "Humpy" Tobiason — settled on a farm in Wayne Township, where his grandson, George Tobiason, is now living. His interest was raising horses and Black Angus beef cattle. They also milked Holstein cows.
Juergen and Ahlke Tobiason raised a family of three sons — Michael, Henry and Tobias — and five daughters — Mary, Katherine, Johanna, Dora and Emma. Of the family one daughter, Dora, is still living. She will be 90 years old this Sept. 13.
Their family married and settled on farms nearby except for Johanna, who died at the age of 20 years by being badly burned by an accident of starting a furnace fire.
Juergen Tobiason farmed with his sons, Michael and Henry Tobiason, until his death. Juergen and Ahlke Tobiason were lifelong members of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church.

Henry Tobiason and George Tobiason, brothers, of Wayne township, two of the most prosperous farmers in this locality, are just now the envy of all their German neighbors.  Last week, on the same day, their respective wives presented them with a pair of bouncing twins, a son and daughter each.  The Tobiasons wear faces as radiant as a June sunrise, and if you want to see a smile mantle their countenances until the corners of their mouths get tangled up in the back hair, just mention the twins.  We congratulate the happy parents on their deserved prosperity and hope that the family of Tobiason may become as numerous as the sands of the seas.
NOTE:  Twins of Henry Tobiassen were Adelene Gertrude Tobiassen and Johann Behrends Tobiassen.  Twins of George Tobiassen were Michael R Tobiasssen and Katherina Sophia Tobiassen.
