John Lyle Van Meter

John L. Van Meter, one of the very highly respected citizens of the Chelan valley, died at his home in Lakeside at 1:30 am, Tuesday, April 6, after a brief illness with la grippe and pneumonia. The funeral service was held at the residence at 10 o'clock Wednesday forenoon and was conducted by Rev. Wm. Hoskins, pastor of the Chelan M. E. church, and the remains were interred in Fraternal cemetery.

Mr. Van Meter was in his 89th year at the time of his death, but until the fatal sickness overtook him only a few days ago he was unusually bright in mind and active of body for one of his years. He was born at Springfield, Ohio, on October 30, 1820. On August 16, 1842 he was married to Miss Margaret A. Eagle. Seven children were born to this marriage, three of whom are now living, viz: A. E. Van Meter of Philadelphia, Pa.; C. E. Van Meter of Johnson, Kansas; and Mrs. Flora V. Kirkton of Canyon City, Colorado. Subsequent to the death of his first wife, he was married to Miss Amanda E. Cline on November 23, 1861. To them four children were born, all but one of whom live on Lake Chelan and were present at the funeral. They are C. L. Van Meter, of Monticello, Iowa; and C. W., B. C. and W. H. Van Meter, all of Lakeside.
Mr. Van Meter lived in Ohio near the place of his birth until 1867, when he moved to Minnesota. A year later he moved to Missouri and lived in that state continuously until 1903, when he came to Lake Chelan.

"Lake Chelan's Oldest Man Dead. Lakeside, Washington, April 10--John L. Van meter, aged 88 years, the oldest man on Lake Chelan, died at his home here April 5. For years this venerable old man had been a failiar sight daily on the streets of Lakeside. Mr. Van Meter leaves an aged widow and several sons.
At almost the hour of the old man's death a daughter was born to his son, C.W. Van Meter, and wife."
