Michael Hyder Sr was born circa 1743 at Hampshire Co., VA. He married Elizabeth Wood(s), daughter of John Wood(s) and Agness (Woods), on December 2, 1764. He was a Powder Mill owner & Farmer between 1760 and 1790. He left a will in 1782 at Washington Co., NC. Powder Branch was named after the occupation of Michael and a neighbor , who made gun powder before 1790. He died on June 25, 1790 at Carter Co., TN. He was buried after June 25, 1790 at Hyder Cemetery, Powder Branch, Carter Co., TN. (Bob King)

Was in the following battles of the Revolution, Thickety Fort, Cedar Springs and Musgrove's Mill in South Carolina. Was detailed from the King's Mountain, SC espedition to defend the Watauga Settlement from Indian invasion.
