Individual Details

William Craig

(17 Jul 1774 - 10 May 1851)

Although family tradition has it that William and Sarah moved to South Carolina between 1805-07 it is highly unlikely. They were not found in the 1810 SC census. Deed books of York County, SC show that William was there from 1813 until 1821. Although the "Craig Book" says that Sarah was buried in the Old Hawfields Cemetery in Orange County that is also suspect considering the distance from York County to Orange County, lack of embalming and usual mode of travel of the day.

On 12/5/1821 Sarah signed legal papers giving William permission to sell the property in York County and it was, presumably, at this time that they moved from SC to Maury County, TN where their only child, William F. was born.

William and Sarah moved to Perry County before 1830 where William's son, Allen Woods Craig already lived. In the mid 1830s William built a house on Greensboro Road near Marion, AL, the County Seat of Perry County. In a booklet published by the City of Marion the house was described as, "Not a mansion but a farmhouse, representative of the better farmhouses of the period which were often erected in the wilderness". At William's death the house passed to Sarah and at her death it passed to William F. who sold it that same year (Proving that W.F. could not have been born that year.). The house, minus the westwing, has been restored.
