John Fraser

John Fraser was born in Scotland about 1777 and went into business in Charleston around 1803 as a member of Means and Fraser, which became Coit and Fraser and then John Fraser & Co. The firm achieved a highly respected credit rating.
On January 4, (1854) Hon Fraser died, leaving most of his remaining property to his daughter, Clara Isabella Fraser. His son, John Augustus Fraser had moved with his wife, Mary Lenoir, to Sumpter, SC .John Augustus died in 1858 and his young son, John Augustus Fraser was taken to Texas as a child by his mother and a stepfather.
George Alfred Trenholm was a member of the firm of John Fraser & Co from January 1, 1835 and on June 30, 1836 John Fraser gave his son, John Augustus Fraser and George Alfred Trenholm the power of attorney to handle business affairs for him. In 1838 Trenholme was a copartner of John Fraser and they traded under the firm of John Fraser & Co.
The business was located at North Central Wharf (at the foot of Cumberland Street) which was the head of the cotton trade with immense warehouses and long rows of offices. John Fraser & Co. at its peak could handle 20,000 bales in a morning. Ships from the East Indies, Liverpool, Havre, and Bremen crowded the docks.[From George Alfred Trenholm by Ethel Nepveux, pg 6]
