From Charleston Wills, 34, p 1 (marked by JTC as incomplete) - "Thomas Mathewes of John's Island, Planter - confirms gifts to daughter Harriet Rebecca Mathewes and son William Edwards Mathewes, to friend Maria Mathewes, wife of Benjamin Mathewes and formerly Miss Maria Croft, annuity of $150 during life yearly free of husband and charge for this payment."
"My land called 'Whitehall' and negroes whom I possessed before present marriage, except Ben and Betty, hereinafter bequeathed to my wife and her children and to my son John Ward Mathewes, my said sons part to be liable for 1/2 and wife and her children other half.
