Daniel Flud

(Abt 1770 - Dec 1829)

On John's Island he owned a 1,414 acre plantation and twenty slaves acquired through a marriage settlement with his first wife. Daniel Flud had properties in Charleston, Colleton, and Orangeburgh Districts. His 1799 tax return stated that he owned 2,933 acres of land and eighty-two slaves on the Stono River, St. Paul's Parish. According to the federal census for 1810, he owned sixty slaves in Orangeburgh District. He also owned a plantation, Brackey, in the upper part of St. John's, Berkeley Parish.
Flud represented St. Mathewes Parish in the House in the Seventeenth General Assembly [1806-1808] and was a member of the committee on contingent accounts during the period. He also served as director of the Bank of the State of South Carolina [circa 1814-1824]
Flud first married Elizabeth Stanyarne Mathewes, daughter of John Raven and Elizabeth Holmes Mathewes, on January 1, 1795, and they had one child, William Hampton. Following Elizabeth's death on March 2, 1803, Flud married Mary Stanyarne on November 10, 1803. They had four children, Milton, Augustus, Julius, and Daniel [1818-96]. Flud died in the year 1829.
