John Willis Sr

(Abt 1648 - 1715)

John Willis deeded 100 acres of 261 acres of patented land to his son John Jr in 1694 and the balance of 161 acres to his son William in 1701. Furthermore part of the 300 acres from Washington to Freake was acquired by exchanged by Tippett and Hauxford. William Willis sold 12 acres from his father's patent of 261 acres to Hauxford. Hauxford exchanged 12 acres of the Washington patent he owned to John Willis Jr. John Willis Sr and William Willis both died; John in 1715 and William in 1716. John Jr died in 1728. The land went to his nephew, son of William, who then sold it to Church Wardens.

Indenture made 31st May 1737 between JOHN WILLIS of Hanover Par., King Geo.County,Virginia., Planter to William Robinson, Gent, of same ... whereas JOHN WILLIS SR., Dec’d, grandfather of the said JOHN WILLIS party to these presents was in his lifetime seized in Fee of 261 acres of land with all the appurtenances.. situate lying and being in the aforesaid Parish of Hanover and County of King George which was granted unto him by letters Patent bearing the date of Oct. 21, 1669 and being so seized by deed or assignment indorsed on the back of the said letters Patent bearing the date of April 26, 1701 did give and grant unto his son WILLIAM WILLIS, now deceased and his heirs lawfully begotten of his body 161 acres of land part of the said 260 acres by the name of ALL THE REMAINING LAND OF THE WITHIN PATENT of land except 100 acres formerly given to his son JOHN WILLIS as by the said letters of Patent and assignment recorded in the County of Richmond relation thereunto my more at large appear and WHEREAS the said WILLIAM WILLIS is now dead and the 161 acres of land are descended and come to the said JOHN WILLIS party to these presents, thel eldest son and heir of the body of the said WILLIAM WILLIS whereby the said JOHN WILLIS is seized of the said premises in Fee tail and whereas by an inquisition taken before BENJ. BERRYMAN, Gent., Sheriff of sd King Geo. Co. on March last by birtue of awrit in the nature of and ad quod damnum to him directed pursuiant to the act of the Assembly in such cases made and provided it is found that the said 161 acres of land are of the value of 60 pounds sterling and no more and that same are a separate parcel and a parcel of or contigueous to other entailed lands in the possession and seizen of the said JOHN WILLIS as by the inquisition now remaining in the Secretary’s office of this Colony relation being thereunto had may more at large apear... JOHN WILLIS doth hereby grant bargain and sell to said Wm. Robinson. Release is signed by ELIZABETH, wife of JOHN WILLIS.

Churchwardens of sd Parish of other part.. by deeds of lease & release .. for sum Sixty pounds Sterling .. sold 261 acres .. formerly granted unto JOHN WILLIS Grandfather of sd John Willis .. by Letters Pattent one and Twentyeth day of October 1669 .. 100 acres part were given by John Willis the Grandfather to his Son John Willis deceased in Fee tail by Deed 10th December 1694 and at Death of the sd John Willis the Son without issue ... reverted to John Willis Party to these presents as heir at Law of the said John Willis the Grandfather and residue given by John Willis the Grandfather to his son WILLIAM WILLIS (Father of the sd John Willis Party to these presents and now Deceased) in Fee Tail by deed indorsed on back of the Letters Patent .. dated 26th April 1701 and by death of William Willis came to sd John Willis party to these presents .. as his Eldest Son and heir ..

John Willis Sr held all land in fee simple*, his absolute control and could dispose of it as he wished. When he deeded to his sons John and William it was entailed and gave their wives lifetime occupancy right. John, son of William and his mother released their rights to the Church Wardens.

Entailed* defined as to restrict inheritance of land to a specific group of heirs, such as individual's sons.
