William White

( - 21 Feb 1621)

The ancestry of William White of the Mayflower is not known. Incorrect royal lineages have been given for him, as well as an incorrect identification of him as the son of Rev. John White of London. Most of the passengers on the Mayflower were of the lower classes, had a trade, and planned on working hard in the new land. A brief history of the English Separatists who became known as The Pilgrims is written under Edward Fuller, another Prouty Mayflower ancestor in this genealogy.
About 1615, William's wife Susanna gave birth to their son they named Resolved. The Separatists were living in Leyden, Holland at this time, so it is assumed to be Resolved's birthplace. Some sources say there were two other children born to William and Susanna in Leyden, Holland, that died as infants.
When the Mayflower sailed William, Susanna who was 7-months pregnant, and son Resolved went on the voyage along with two servants. Governor William Bradford wrote a list of those that came over first in 1620 and started the New England Colony which included, "Mr. William White and Sussanna his wife and one sone caled Resolved, and one borne on ship board caled Peregrine, and two servants William Holbeck and Edward Thomson." (Crapo, 46) Susanna gave birth to another son they named Peregrine on board the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor in early December, 1620. The name Peregrine means wanderer, traveller, or foreigner. The "tradition" to use a unique name to commemorate the Mayflower's voyage and the Pilgrims journey was also used by the Hopkins family, who named their son who was born during the voyage Oceanus.
William White was the eleventh signer of the forty-one men who signed the agreement called the Mayflower Compact drawn up on board before disembarking in the new land. William White and his two servants died during the harsh first winter of the Plymouth Colony which took more than half the colonists. His widow Susanna, left with two small boys, would later marry Mr. Edward Winslow whose wife had also died that winter.
