Individual Details

Nathaniel Fuller Sr.

(1 Mar 1675/76 - 1741)

Nathaniel and his older brother Daniel both bought farms in Windham, Connecticut in 1701. In 1712, they both bought farms in New Scituate (later named Ashford because of the many ash trees growing there) along with a James Fuller.
In Ashford, Nathaniel was a leading citizen, active in both church and town affairs. He was chosen to be on the committee that located and laid out highways at the first town meeting in 1715. The following year he and Daniel were directed to decide how much to pay John Mixer for boarding the minister. On Dec 31, 1716 Nathaniel was chosen first selectman. He and his brother were in the group of 45 that gave bonds March 5, 1718, and drew lots and were admitted as proprietors of Ashford. They was active in building the meeting house and home for the minister. Nathaniel signed the covenant of the new church Nov 26, 1718, the same day his son Nathaniel was baptized. He was an agent for Ashford at the General Court's Committee meeting of Sept 9, 1719, helping settle business affairs for the town. He was paid 2.2 pounds "for tending seven days on the above committee." He was one of the three leading men in the west section of town.
Nathaniel and Daniel Fuller were among the privileged few granted "pew room" in the meeting house in 1723. They were required to build by October 1 and plaster and whitewash all the lower part of the meeting house to the lower girth.
In 1731 he was living in Mansfield, an area in the northeast section of Windham Village that became its own town. His brother Thomas was also living in this area. Between 1715 and 1754 he and his son Nathaniel were named in 73 land transactions as grantee or grantor.
