Virgil and Mae both worked for the USPS. Virgil was a mail carrier for close to 30 years. When he started he was delivering mail on horseback.

Virgil was a a small-town (Centerville, Missouri) high school basketball star and had a life-time love for the sport. He also loved to listen to St. Louis Cardinal baseball games on the radio.

Virgil was an avid fisherman of the rivers and streams around Ironton, Missouri. He also enjoyed hunting small game, including turkey, rabbits, and squirrel.

Virgil frequented Ironton's Kozy Korner Cafe which was reportedly famouse for its coconut cream “mile high” pie.
