James Logan Bonney

(8 Nov 1829 - 11 May 1901)

I found a record of a James L. Bonney applying for a land patent in Calaveras County, California on 25 Oct 1897. I believe this is probably our James Logan Bonney. This was in a file on USGenWeb. Later I found the same info in a Land Records database on rootsweb (with the additional information that this was a Homestead patent), plus a record of a "Servall Bonney" who applied for a "Military Scrip Warrant Patent" in Calaveras County on 13 Sep 1876. I wonder if Servall could be a son of James Logan Bonney. (I also wonder if "Servall" might be a mis-spelling.) However, if Servall had already served in the military before 1876, I'm guessing he was 21 or older and so I'd estimate he was born in 1855 or earlier. That would make him too old to be a son of Francis Bonney.

The 1880 census shows James' father born in NY and mother VA.
