Alexander "Alec" Lenox
(Feb 1873 - 26 Mar 1921)
According to an article in the Rolla New Era Newspaper, 29 Aug 1896 edition (found on Missouri Digital Heritage web site), Alex (or Alec as it was spelled in the article) was at Ida Lenox's wedding as a best man on the evening of 18 Aug 1896 at the home of John J. Lenox.
As the guest list is short I believed at first that Alec must be another son of John J. previously unaccounted for. However, he was inexplicably living with his aunt, Margaret Shedd, a widow in Cold Springs, Phelps County in 1880.
I tracked down his death certificate, though, and found his father was listed as a William T. Lenox. The death certificate also says he was born in Phelps County and buried in St. James, Missouri.
I found "Alexander" on the 1900 census of Meramec Township, Phelps, Missouri living with his wife's parents and I believe this is the same person. He is a reasonable age to be an older brother being born the same month when John J. and Martha Jane were married. He and his family had moved to Jasper, Missouri by 1920.
Eventually I found him on the 1860 census and figured out who he was and that he is mentioned in the Cowen/Lenox and Next of Kin as the descendant of John Lenox the son of Charles Lenox.
I also found an Alexander Lenox mentioned in the Rolla New Era Newspaper 17 Nov 1894 where on the probate docket it says, "Hamilton Lenox, curator of Alexander, Ed, Mary, Shelton, Catherine, and William Lenox, minors." So it would appear that his mother had probably passed away when he was young (thus his living with his aunt) and that his father then also passed away around 1894 or before.
So, was Alex at the wedding mentioned above just as a friend or as a cousin? I had thought that Alex might be the key to figuring out once and for all how John J. Lenox fits into the family, but alas his knowing John J. Lenox and family proves nothing.
