John moved to Wilkes Co., NC, from Goochland Co., VA in 1772. He was
a minister of the Old Roaring River Baptist Church. Pastor, Cub
Creek Church, Willkes, NC from 1796-1811 and lived on the Yadkin
River near Wildesboro, NC.

John Proffitt's Will
State of North Carolina Wilkes County. In the name of God Amen. I
John Profit of Wilkes County and State aforesaid being of sound and
perfect mind and memory, (Blessed be God) do make this fifteenth day
of November in the year of our Lord AD 1813 make and publish this my
last Will and Testament in manner following, that is to say, first I
give my soul to Almighty God who gave it hoping through the Merits of
Almighty God that he will Raise both Soul and Body into the Mansions
of Eternal Glory.
Item: My desire is that all my just Debts shall be paid and my Body
Decently Buried.
Item: I give and Bequeath to my loving wife Susnnah Profitt all my
Land and all the Rest of my Estate of every kind for her use during
her life and after her Decease I give and Bequeath it to my loving
Son Samuel Profit all my Lands and all my working tools that belongs
to the plantation and my Will is that all the Rest of my Estate be
Equally Divided between my Son William Profit and my Daughter Lidda
Souther and my Daughter Mary Forguson and I hereby make and Ordain my
worthy friend Joshua Souther and Archibald Lovelau Executors of this
my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I the said John
Profitt have to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and Seal
the Day and Year above written.

Wilkes County Court Orders show that in 1787 Spencer ADAMS, orphaned
son of Charles ADAMS, was bound out at age 9 to John Proffitt until
age 21. He was to learn farming and to read and write.
