James was listed as the head of his own household in the 1850 Reynolds County census, but I'm assuming he's in this family, because there are so many common names (and because the families are listed one after the other as if they lived on the same property or something). There's also another Brooks family in the same census, but since the head-of-house is another William (this one age 40), I doubt if he could be a sibling (maybe an uncle).
