Axton served in the American Revolution. On November 11, 1832, at age92, he applied for a pension in Henry Co., VA for his service in the war.On that day he gave testimony in court as to his participation in theContinental Army, but admits that with age he has forgotten some of thespecifics. The basics of his testimony are: Axton was born Feb. 3, 1742in Stafford Co., VA. In 1775 he enlisted in the army in Fauquier Co. VAin Capt. William Picket's Company (also called the "Culpeper Batallion",where they then marched to Norfolk. He was with the regiment throughLong Bridge, Williamsburg, and Suffolk, and was then discharges. Axtonthen recollects 2-3 years later he was drafted and spent another 3 yearswith the army. He was commanded by Capt. Mountjoy as the company marchedto North River, where Capt. Woodson took command of the company, and theythen marched to White Plains. Around this time he was transferred fromthe northern army to the southern army, and fought at the Battle ofGuildford under, he believes, Capt. Richard Samson.
The record then shows others testifying on Axton's behalf as to hismilitary service. A pension was granted to Axton January 2, 1833 in theamount of $80 per year, with back pay to 1831 totaling $160.
