This Nicholas, who married Margaret, daughter of John Goodspeed at Wingrave on 30 Jan. 1577/8, was, in turn, the son of John Putnam of Rowsham and Wingrave, who in his will dated 19 Sept. 1573, proved 14 Nov. 1573, names his sons Nicholas, Richard and Thomas. To his son Richard he left his house in Wingrave with eight yards of meadow lands and a close called "Smythes Green" (Arch. Bucks, Filed Will). The Wingrave Court Roll for 1573-4 shows that at his death John Putnam held a house there of the Honor of Berkhampstead by knight's service, which house was "sometime the town house, with a close called Smythes Green and 8 yards of meado in franchise and 3 acres of arable land. Richard Putnam is his heir, of full age, whereby 4d is due the Queen for his relief." (Court Rolls and Ministers' Accounts, Berkhampstead, Portfolio 155, no. 38.) It must here be noted that Richard was not the eldest son, but is described as heir because he was devisee of this land by his father's will.[1]

Nicholas Putnam, eldest son of John of Rowsham, probably born about 1540; married at Wingrave, 30 January 1577, Margaret, daughter of John and Elizabeth Goodspeed. She was baptized at Wingrave, 16 Aug., 1556, Nicholas Goodspeed* being godfather and Margaret Theed and Margaret Milne godmothers.[4]
Nicholas Putnam lived in Wingrave until about 1585 or later when he removed to Stewkeley. He inherited property from his father and from both his brothers, and undoubtedly for the times was exceedingly well to do.[5]
Nicholas Goodspyde, John Aged, and Nich. Grasse, were witnesses to the will of John Grace, the elder, of Rowsham in Wingrave, husbandman 13 May 1538. (Arch. Bucks.) The Grace family, toward the end of this century, was one of influence and wealth in Wingrave. They appear, from their wills, to have been in about the same position as the Putnams there. John Goodspeed was buried at Wingrave, 30 Jan 1602.[6]Name

Nicholas' brother Richard in his will 21 June 1576-27 Oct. 1576 left to Nicholas "my house at Wingrave and all the freehold land which I now have in possession, given me by the will of my father John Putnam".
In his will 1 Jan. 1597/8-27 Sept. 1598 Nicholas gave his son John his land in Aston Abbots.

NICHOLAS PUTNAM
Nicholas was born in Wingrave about 1540. On July 30, 1577, he married Margaret Goodspeed. His will is dated January 1, 1597 and was proved on September 27, 1598. After his death, Margaret remarried on December 8, 1614 to William Huxley at Aston Abbots. She died January 8, 1618/19.
The children of Nicholas and Margaret Putnam were:
ANNE PUTNAM who was christened on October 12, 1578. She married William Arnold on January 26, 1604/05.
JOHN PUTNAM who was christened on January 17, 1579/80 and died December 30, 1662. John married Priscilla Gould. This is the John Putnam of Aston Abbots who came to America and settled in Salem Village (now Danvers) Massachusetts.
ELIZABETH PUTNAM who was christened on February 1, 1581. She married Edward Betham on October 22, 1612.
THOMAS PUTNAM who was christened on September 20, 1584.
RICHARD PUTNAM who was christened on July 16, 1590.
WILLIAM PUTNAM who was christened on November 12, 1592.

NICHOLAS PUTNAM
Nicholas was born in Wingrave about 1540. On July 30, 1577, he married Margaret Goodspeed. His will is dated January 1, 1597 and was proved on September 27, 1598. After his death, Margaret remarried on December 8, 1614 to William Huxley at Aston Abbots. She died January 8, 1618/19.
