Ancestral Note

This Nicholas, who married Margaret, daughter of John Goodspeed at Wingrave on 30 Jan. 1577/8, was, in turn, the son of John Putnam of Rowsham and Wingrave, who in his will dated 19 Sept. 1573, proved 14 Nov. 1573, names his sons Nicholas, Richard and Thomas. To his son Richard he left his house in Wingrave with eight yards of meadow lands and a close called "Smythes Green" (Arch. Bucks, Filed Will). The Wingrave Court Roll for 1573-4 shows that at his death John Putnam held a house there of the Honor of Berkhampstead by knight's service, which house was "sometime the town house, with a close called Smythes Green and 8 yards of meado in franchise and 3 acres of arable land. Richard Putnam is his heir, of full age, whereby 4d is due the Queen for his relief." (Court Rolls and Ministers' Accounts, Berkhampstead, Portfolio 155, no. 38.) It must here be noted that Richard was not the eldest son, but is described as heir because he was devisee of this land by his father's will.[1]
Biography

Nicholas Putnam of Wingrave & Stewkley,
born about 1540, Wingrave, England, married 30 Jan 1577, Wingrave, England, died 1598, Stewkley, England.[2][3]
Nicholas Putnam, eldest son of John of Rowsham, probably born about 1540; married at Wingrave, 30 January 1577, Margaret, daughter of John and Elizabeth Goodspeed. She was baptized at Wingrave, 16 Aug., 1556, Nicholas Goodspeed* being godfather and Margaret Theed and Margaret Milne godmothers.[4]
Nicholas Putnam lived in Wingrave until about 1585 or later when he removed to Stewkeley. He inherited property from his father and from both his brothers, and undoubtedly for the times was exceedingly well to do.[5]
Nicholas Goodspyde, John Aged, and Nich. Grasse, were witnesses to the will of John Grace, the elder, of Rowsham in Wingrave, husbandman 13 May 1538. (Arch. Bucks.) The Grace family, toward the end of this century, was one of influence and wealth in Wingrave. They appear, from their wills, to have been in about the same position as the Putnams there. John Goodspeed was buried at Wingrave, 30 Jan 1602.[6]Name
