Disambiguation

This is the profile of William Mann
of Cambridge born Kent, England died 1662 in Cambridge, Massachusetts who m/1 Mary Jarred m/2 widow Alice (Teel) Tidd, and had only one child Rev Samuel Mann (Harvard).
Don't confuse him with William Mann - one of the first settlers of Providence, Rhode Island, who died before 1650 and who married Frances Hopkins and had two children Abraham Mann and Mary Mann.[1][2][3][4] He arrived in 1640 according to Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration Directory. The American Genealogist states that he was from either Somersetshire or Wiltshire, England.[5]
Disputed Origins

Current state of knowledge: The origins of William Mann, early immigrant to New England, are not known. Previously this profile was linked as the son of Charles Mann who was actually Christopher Mann and Affra Parker of Hutton, Kent, England. However, due to research performed by WikiTree user L. Felix it is shown conclusively that:
"Charles" Mann who was knighted 15 Jun 1625 was actually Christopher.[6] The name Charles may have been a misinterpretation of the 1619 Visitation of Kent where Christopher was listed as "Charolus".[7]
Sir Christopher Mann of Kent did indeed have a son William, but that son was knighted in England in 1642[6] (p. 212 of this source) and signed his own entry in the 1663 Visitation of Kent.[8] Therefore Sir William son of Sir Christopher is provably NOT the early immigrant to Massachusetts.
Originally this section stated: His son left a journal stating that his father was one of the first to settlers in New England and that he was born in Kent, England the youngest of eleven children but did not name who William Mann's father was.[9] Robert Charles Anderson finds no evidence that he arrived before 1634 and therefore places some doubt on the veracity of the journal.[10] In a letter written by Alrick H. Mann he stated that "I am inclined to believe that William was the eldest on of Sir Charles Mann, of Hatton Bradock, in Kent, knighted in 1625 by Charles I."[11] Alrick H. Mann provides no evidence for this lofty claim. Anderson says his origins are unknown.[10]
Biography
This profile is part of the Mann Name Study.Birth & Baptism

William Mann of Cambridge was probably born about 1607 in England. His parentage is not known (see above) although his son's journal stated that he was from Kent.[10]
Immigration

Anderson in "The Great Migration" states immigration by 1634, proven by a land grant in Cambridge on 4 Aug 1634.[10]
Marriage & Children

He married first about 1643 to Mary Jarred.[10] He married second on 11 June 1657 to Alice (Teel) Tidd widow of John, in Cambridge, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[12][13][14]
Note that Torrey in "New England Marriages to 1700" gives this marriage date as 11 Jun 1661.[15] The Cambridge Vital Records source cited above clearly shows 1657 but this is a hand-transcribed record, so possibly the copyist made a mistake.[12]
William Mann had one son with Mary Jarred:
Rev Samuel Mann born 6 July 1647 Cambridge (died 22 May 1719). He married Esther Ware on 13 May 1673, born 28 September 1655, died 3 September 1734 Cambridge. He attended Harvard College[10][11]Death & Estate

He left a will written on 10 Dec 1661 and proved on 1 Apr 1662 at Cambridge bequeathing to his "loving wife" and his "only son Samuel".[16]
Research Notes

Assuming Samuel Mann's journal was correct and William Mann came from Kent, there are likely a variety of possible baptismal records found:
15 Mar 1589 at Eastchurch to William Man (this may have been the father of the William Man born at Eastchurch 1609 below)
24 Feb 1599 at Dover to "Gabrahell" (presumably Gabriel) in findmypast.co.uk
24 Nov 1605 at Chiselhurst St. Nicholas to William and Elisabeth Man[17] (this also appears on findmypast as both Chiselhurst and Chelsfield), likely the man who married Elisabeth Mace at the same place 22 Jul 1627[18]
20 Jan 1605/06 at Gillingham St. Mary Magdalene to Christopher Man[19]
10 Dec 1609 at Eastchurch to William although this was likely the man who married Mary Token at the same place on 15 Jan 1634 as the marriage record showed a birthdate of 1609 (both records appear on findmypast.co.uk). A man of the same name married Jone Eeve at the same place on 16 Jan 1636
Baptisms for William "Mun" in Kent are also easily found.

There was no such person as Sir Charles Mann & all his details are actually those of Sir Christopher Man. I have added some sources & can give others if necessary. Sir Christopher is not the father of this William. Sir Christopher did have a son William, but he remained in England & can be accounted for.
posted 2 months ago by L Felix Brad StaufReviewing the sources in your comment on the page of "Charles" I would agree with you, Charles was actually Christopher and was NOT the father of the immigrant William Mann
I will take on revisions to the profile of William; would you be so kind as to revise Charles' profile as you clearly have a good understanding of that family? Thanks in advance...
