John, the son of Thomas Greenwood and Hannah Ward, was born in Newton MA in 1673. He married Hannah Trowbridge there in 1695."John Greenwood, after the death of his father, Thomas, occupied the Greenwood estate until the day of his death. He married first Hannah Trowbridge (born June 15, 1672, and died January 21, 1728. ) He married second on July 27, 1729, Mrs. Alice Crafts Lyon.
"Mr. Greenwood was a weaver and carpenter on the homestead in Newton, Massachusetts, selectman eighteen years from 1711, justice of the peace, who consummated nearly all the marriages in town for many years, representative to the general court three years, and died August 29, 1787. On the death of his father, he took the property, paying brother Thomas for his share, supported younger half brothers James and William until they were 14 years of age, and also contracted to take care of his stepmother, Abigail Spring Greenwood, during her life.
"His will was made Aug. 15, 1737, and probated Oct. 4, 1737 (Middlesex probate docket 690). He leaves to his wife 66 pounds, one half indoor furnishings, 1/3 corn crop, and use of n.e. room downstairs. Thomas, the eldest son, to have 60 pounds after wife's dowery shall cease; son Daniel owes 40 pounds, he to pay the estate 10 pound only; movables to daughter, Elizabeth Childs, Hannah Fuller, Ruth Jackson, Susanna Bacon after the decease of wife and 5 pounds apiece; the balance of the estate to youngest son Josiah. As executor of his father's estate, Josiah files an agreement to provide a horse to his mother to ride to church on. John was undoubtedly pleased when, after the turnpike bridged the river, in 1813 Rufus Ellis built a cotton mill of 3,000 spindle capacity on the Needham (Wellesley) side of the river. In addition to the local sawmill, a fulling mill was added to Newton in 1717. "Thus John and William Clark, Nathaniel Parker and Nathaniel Longley became equal owners of the property (sawmill) to which they added in 1710 a grist mill and in 1715 a fulling mill. A fulling mill contains a mechanical device to thicken or shrink woolen cloths by the use of fuller's earth and water, and by the same operation to extract any oily substances that may be in the wool. "The third occupant of the Thomas Greenwood estate in Newton, Mass. was Lieut. Josiah Greenwood, son of the above John. His will was made 25 March 1789, and was probated 13 June 1792 (Middlesex probate docket 690) provides wife Prudence to abide by her marriage agreement; legacies to now surviving children, Neverson, Ebenezer, EsterMurdock, Sarah Greenwood and Alice Clark and granddaughter, Sarah Bartlett, consisting of books and house furnishings; daughters Norcross and other children and grandchildren, not mentioned have had their shares; to son Ebenezer all the real estate and personal not disposed of.
