Samuel Putnam

Was Deacon in Danvers and later in Lunenburg. Settled in Lunenburg and was a Selectman there 1767-70. Age 52 at death.

Eben p 150: Samuel, in 1752, was elected one of the first tythingmen chosen by the new town of Danvers. On 4 Sep 1757, he was chosen deacon of the church, but soon afterward removed to Lunenburg and was chosen deacon of the church there. He was selectman of Lunenburg, 1767-70.
He was born in Salem Villiage and baptised there. He dided in Lunenburg at age 52. He married Sarah Nurse who was living in 1777. She was probably the dau of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Nurse

For many years I thought the wife of Capt Archelaus Putnam was Sarah dau of Samuel Putnam (1723-1776) and Sarah Nurse (1722-1777). I don't know why I thought this way...I will have to research my old notes and she what I did, but as of Dec 2012 I discovered that A W Putnam lists in the History of Sutton, Sarah, Dau of Cornelius Putnam and Elizabeth Nelson Perkins.
Capt Archelaus would have been A W's grt gradfather so he should have known of her. She died one month before he was born so it is possible he heard of her as he grew up.

I'm not sure how I got Samuel as both Eben and A W say Cornelius but I will look through my old notes and keep Cornelius for now.

Samuel Putnam was born before 5 Jan 1723/24 in Salem Village (1508, 1509). He died on 2 Jan 1775 in Luneburg, Worcester , MA (1510). In 1752, Samuel was elected one of the first tythingmen chosen by the new town of Danvers. He married Sarah Nurse on 14 Apr 1742 in Salem (1511, 1512). Eben has marriage on the 4th. Sarah died after 1777 (1513). Probably daughter of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Mitchell) Nurse; if so, born 14 Nov 1722. Source is Eben p 150. Their children:
Martha (1514) was baptized on 27 Mar 1742/43 in Salem Village (1515, 1516). She was born 9 Sep 1742 in Salem Village (1517). She died 3 Seo 1821 (1518). Martha was moved from the third child of Samuel (Eleazer, John, John) to the eldest child of Samuel (Thomas, Thomas, John).

Thomas born 10 Nov 1747 in Salem Village (1521). Baptized on 29 Nov 1747 in Salem Village (1522). Died 26 Dec 1747 in Salem Village (1523). Eben has the death before the baptismal date.

Ruth was moved from the eighth child of Samuel (Eleazer, John, John) to the fifth child of Samuel (Thomas, Thomas, Thomas, John).

He appeared on the census in 1800 in Langdon, Sullivan, NH (1556). The census information is 01410 22011. He died 11 Aug 1825 in Covington, Tioga, PA (1557). Elijah ran a tavern in Langdon from 1796 until about 1809. He then moved the family southwest to Covington, Tioga, PA.
Lucy born 15 Nov 1764 in Salem Village (1558). Died 3 Aug 1807 (1559, 1560). Vol 1 has the death on 11 Aug 1825.
